Ferland’s end-of-career payout, according to city officials, was $84,251.

PORTSMOUTH — When former police chief Lou Ferland retired last month after 30 years on the job, he took advantage of a legacy benefit which allowed him to cash out his unused sick and vacation time.

Ferland’s end-of-career payout, according to city officials, was $84,251.

Also eligible to turn her unused time off into cash when she retired last month, former deputy city manager Cindy Hayden received a payout of $63,772, according to the city’s human resources office.
